“What Kind of Experience Do You Have?”

If you’re looking for a job, then you’ve got to sell yourself as the best candidate to your future employer, don’t you? Then what’s the best way to do this?

Well, the following approach is designed mainly for a young person who’s just entering the job market for the very first time. But, by making a few simple changes, most of it will apply to any job seeker.

So, let’s say you haven’t had any formal employment before, and your interviewer asks, “What kind of experience do you have?” Here, a typical response might be, “Well, I’ve done some babysitting and have washed my neighbors’ cars in the past, but this will be my first real job.”

However, as long as you think this way and give this response, you’ll likely find it hard to get a job, because you haven’t addressed the real concern of the employer.

Fortunately, you don’t need to give the reply above. Instead, there’s a much better way to respond. So, here’s what you can say:

“Thanks for asking about my experience. I can see why it’s important to you. Now, just so I understand you correctly, you’d like to know if I’m the kind of person who can do the job, so that our customers get the best products and the best service possible. Is that right?” [Wait for the positive reply.]

“Well, I’ve gained enough experience which will help me be a great employee. For instance, I’ve learned the importance of being dependable and accurate in everything I do. In addition to that, I’ve learned the importance of getting along with people, because everyone does their work better when they get along with each other.”

“I also know that certain things will be expected of me when you hire me. For instance, I expect to do all the work you need me to do, with a positive attitude and in a timely manner. And I also know that if I want a raise, I must earn it by coming in early, working a little harder, and staying late if needed.”

“On top of this, I understand that you need to make a profit in order to succeed and pay your employees. And it’s clear to me that if we as employees do a good job, then the chances are great that the company will make a profit. So, in order to keep my job and get ahead in it, I’m prepared to work hard and give you my best effort. I believe that this is the kind of experience which your company and every other company needs.”

Now, you can make your concluding remarks:

“Jeff, I want this job, and I’m making this commitment to you: I’ll work hard for you, and you’ll never regret having hired me. As a matter of fact, you’ll be proud that you gave me my first opportunity. I’m ready to go to work whenever you need me to. So, when would you like me to start? Tomorrow, or would next week be better?”

Now if you, as a young job seeker, will convey that information with conviction and sincerity, then there probably won’t be an employer anywhere in the world who wouldn’t be impressed. And although saying all of this may not guarantee that you get hired, if you work hard to learn this presentation and deliver it enough times, chances are good you’ll get a job pretty soon.

On top of this, if you’re out of a job at the moment, and there aren’t any openings in your industry, then you can adapt this basic approach to get a job in another field. And all of this is possible because employers will hire you if you present yourself with humble confidence.
